Resolution: Support for the accession of Ukraine into the European Union and NATO

The war in Ukraine has been fought for over 1000 days. A war that is becoming more entrenched. This prolonged war has taken its toll on society, and foreign support for Ukraine is on a knife-edge. The result of the United States presidential elections is of major concern for Ukrainian aid and the EU. Also in Europe, the support for Ukraine is turning around. Far-right forces are endangering Europe’s commitment to support democracy over oppression.

This is why we need a new form of support for Ukraine. Europe should commit aid to Ukraine to help its accession into the European Union and NATO. Ukraine applied for NATO membership in September of 2022 and EU membership in February of 2022. The European Council stated that negotiations for Ukraine have to address issues such as the rule of law, improved governance, and fighting corruption. Even when the war is still ongoing, the rebuilding of Ukraine has already started. Our goal is a free and democratic Ukraine. Rebuilding governmental institutions has to be done with oversight and transparency. The task of eliminating corruption has to be aided by strong and stable EU institutions, and reforming the rule of law has to come with accountability for every official.

Ukraine, as a free and sovereign state, has the right to apply and be assisted in its application for EU and NATO membership. The European commitment to freedom and democracy ties us directly to supporting Ukraine’s fight against autocracy and oppression.
